Pungse Coffee

Hello! ♥

We’ve visited one excellent place recently which we simply cannot help sharing with you!

You may think that this is a museum or even the residence of a king. No! This is a unique Pungse coffee located in Cheonan city.

We were very lucky to meet the owner of the coffee shop Lee Kyung Eun and take an interview during our visit.

Happy reading! You will learn a lot of interesting things and you will definitely not resist the temptation to visit this cafe.

First of all, could you tell us a little about your coffee shop? For example, some special facts.

This is not only a coffee shop but also a real 150 years old Korean traditional Hanok (traditional Korean house). My mom moved it from the KyungBok area and it took 3 years to completely establish it here in Cheonan in 2013. It’s not a newly built Hanok but a really old genuine and ancient one. You can see a lot of similar-looking Hanok cafes everywhere these days but they are mostly newly constructed but not real traditional as ours which is even one of a kind in Cheonan — that what makes our Pungse special.

When did you establish your coffee shop?

Three years ago in summer 2017. The coffee shop itself is not old but as I mentioned before we established it is a very ancient building. Actually, there are two different Hanok on the territory: Anchae, which means “the house where we are living” and Sarangchae, which stands for a place where we can meet customers or friends, like a dining place not designated for living purposes. So we use Sarangchae as a coffee shop.

As we know coffee shops are really popular in Korea. Moreover coffee is the top 1 sold product here.

Yes, exactly.

Do many foreign tourists come here?

Quite many. But most Korean people visit this place, though not only Cheonan citizens but people from all over the country. Nowadays most people have cars and navigation so they can go anywhere and that’s why loads of people from every area of the country arrive here every weekend to enjoy the atmosphere.

When is the peak season? When the biggest amounts of customers come here?

Even though the peak season for traveling is in summer, the most fruitful time for this place is autumn, right now, from September to October. This is the most popular period because of its great vibe, cool pure air, and beautiful “danpung” (autumn leaf color season).

What about special events in this place? Do you make any special festivals or celebrations here? As your coffee shop and surrounding area has a truly magnificent vibe and style.

Not yet. If we hold any festivals or events here this place may become too loud. But I want people to come here to have a peaceful and calm time while enjoying Hanok style and beautiful nature. I am afraid that the party atmosphere can destroy this harmony. Nevertheless, I have a plan for the future to start renting out our coffee shop for wedding ceremonies or some shootings. But still, it will not prevent customers from enjoying the peacefulness here as our coffee shop is closed every Monday and we can appoint all previously mentioned activities for this day of the week.

Is it possible to reach this place by public transport?

We are really sorry but there are no transportation lines here, no bus or subway, but you can always come here by taxi or use car rental services such as Green Car if you have a driving license.

Is there anything else you want to share with us?

I want to tell you a little more about Anchae. It’s absolutely beautiful inside, I wish I could show it to you, but because of Covid-19 I am really sorry that I can’t do it right now, but when this epidemic is over you are welcome to come to our place again and we will invite you inside. My mom is very proud of Anchae, she made this place. She used to owe an antic shop in Itaewon for 10 years that why she has a lot of antic stuff, dishes, porcelain, and furniture from France which is very expensive. If you like such things, you are welcome here to feel this historical vibe. We hope this place will be open for many years so as to gather people and provide a peaceful atmosphere for every customer.
